What is an edge platform? According to analyst Chris Grundemann, the term itself is still difficult to determine.
Grundemann said: “The fringe market is relatively new and difficult to evaluate.” “In fact, the biggest challenge is still related to defining the ‘edge’. There are many different aspects, and there are many different views on the exact meaning (or location). I Think many of them are correct. Therefore, our challenge for this report is to define what we specifically include and how we define this aspect of the edge.”
In the broader technology industry, the term “edge” is used fairly loosely. For the purpose of this report, Grundemann and co-researcher Logan Andrew Green describe edge platforms as platforms that use distributed infrastructure to provide services, content, computing, and security closer to terminal devices, offload the network, and improve performance.

Radar’s Edge Platform Report explores vendors who deliberately and strategically build edge platforms.
The study pointed out that all suppliers under evaluation are pioneers in this field and are advancing in a maturing market. Current edge platform users are early adopters, and Grundemann expects the availability of edge-based technologies and the widespread belief that edge applications and cloud-based products go hand in hand to promote innovation and encourage users to benefit from edge platforms. However, the technological novelty of edge-based applications makes it difficult to determine the next development.
The report pointed out that although there is still a lot to do in this area, now is a good time to start experimenting with “truly distributed applications.” Analysts encourage companies with the appropriate resources to join, but first consider your personal needs, Grundemann said.
He said: “IT leaders need to firmly grasp their specific needs and carry out any potential edge deployments.” “Edge is a niche solution, so there are a series of very serious challenges, namely waiting time. So, first ask What are the requirements, goals, and constraints of my organization? Once you have a clear understanding of the ideal state, you can then begin to determine which type of edge solution is actually appropriate-whether it is the edge platform in the report or Something completely different (e.g. edge hosting).”
And because the market is relatively new, it’s going slow, Grundemann said.
“Like all technology trends, it is easy to fall into the “edge craze”, just like the cloud, if there is no plan to fully marginalize, it may end up costing you.”
